On the road - Chiang Mai-Bangkok

wie gesagt mieteten wir online das billigste Gefährt - genauer gesagt einen Pick Up, handgeschalten, zwei Plätze. Voller Spannung und mit der Erwartung eine Rostlaube in Empfang zu nehmen, "tuktukten" wir zum Flughafen. Unsere Blicke schweiften über den Parkplatz, von einem Pick -Up zum nächsten und dann stand vor uns ein nagelneues Fahrzeug in Übergrösse. Für einmal mussten wir unsere stetigen Rückenbegleiter nicht in ein Gepäckfach zwängen sondern hatten Platz zum Verschwenden. Mit voller Konzentration wagten wir uns auf thailändische Strassen, links, links, links! So fuhren wir der 1. thailändischen Hauptstadt entgegen (ab und zu blinkte der Scheibenwischer anstatt der Blinker - aber eben links, links, links. In Si Satchanalai und später in Soukhothai bewunderten wir Tempelanlagen aus vergangen Zeit und kühlten uns zwischendrin in unserem Auto ab. So trafen wir in der Dunkelheit in Nakhon Sawan ein und fanden mit Hilfe Einheimischer ein tolles Resort mit eigenem Häuschen und Parkplatz. (Die Rezeptionistin gab sich auch ohne Englischkentnisse unglaubliche Mühe und "zeichnete" Fabians Namen und unser Land in allen vier Landesprachen auf ihr Formular :o) Am nächsten Tag machten wir noch einen Abstecher nach Lopburi - die Stadt der Affenmafia und anschliessend gings nach Ayutthaya einem weiteren Unesco Kulturerbe. Am dritten Tag wagten wir uns ins Verkehrschaos von Bangkok. Nach einem versehentlichen Besuch bei der Air Force fanden wir glücklicherweise den Flughafen und konnten das Auto unversehrt zurückgeben. Bangkok erwartete uns mit noch grösseren Tempel, noch gerisserern Taxifahrer und einem sagenhaften Shoppingparadies.

The cheapest option for renting a car was a manual 2 seat pick up. We expected the worst when we went to pick our pick up up. On the parking lot they had 3 pick ups, we got the biggest one, brand new. We had space to waste, our two bags hardly filled the back of our car. Fully concentrated we dared to drive on Thailand‘s roads, left, left. Our first destination was the first capital of the Thai kingdom, Soukhothai. We wandered through vast old temple ruins. Late at night we had to search for a hotel. As the town was not to touristy, it was quite difficult, but with the help of locals we found a cute little resort where we stayed in our own little house with our own parking lot. The next day we started with a visit of temples in Lopburi. The temples there are great as well, but not the main attraction, they are populated by a gang of monkeys. We were glad that only stolen our water bottle. We continued on to Ayuattay, the second capital, which is reachable on a day trip from Bangkok and therefore much more touristy. On our third day as pick up owners, we had to drive into the chaotic traffic of Bangkok, before we made it to the airport, we visited the Thai Air Force, a short u-turn later we found the public airport, where we returned our car. In Bangkok we visited even bigger temples, the cab drivers were more cunning and the markets great.
